The University of Chicago Readings in Western Civilization (nine volumes) makes available to students and teachers a unique selection of primary documents; many in new translations. These readings; prepared for the highly praised Western civilization sequence at the University of Chicago; were chosen by an outstanding group of scholars whose experience teaching that course spans almost four decades. Each volume includes rarely anthologized selections as well as standard; more familiar texts; a bibliography of recommended parallel readings; and introductions providing background for the selections. Beginning with Periclean Athens and concluding with twentieth-century Europe; these source materials enable teachers and students to explore a variety of critical approaches to important events and themes in Western history.Individual volumes provide essential background reading for courses covering specific eras and periods. The complete nine-volume series is ideal for general courses in history and Western civilization sequences.

I can't give it 1 start because it's not the authors fault. As far as the content goes; the information about U.S. history is there; however you won't learn much about any one particular thing since there is so much that needs to be cramped into 1 textbook. If you're like me however; you get the book because you have to.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pretty GoodBy DOOMWARThe American Journey Volume 2 is what we've been using for our U.S. History course this semester. It's a pretty good book filled with information focusing on many important events of the history of America. I would recommend reading the book right after a lecture on the current topic just to re-enforce the information and learn some more things regarding that event. I have thus far enjoyed using this book for the class as it's not written as a stale history book but something with style. The media; aka images in the book really bring the history to life as well. :)0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Book great; but seller even better!By EmboI ordered this textbook from BOOKERC as a Mother's Day present (she requested a replacement for her old high school history textbook). I was unable to order it until the Wednesday before Mother's Day; so wasn't expecting it until early the following week -- but the seller expedited my order (even made a special trip to the PO) -- and I got the book on Saturday!Unfortunately; the book -- although spectacular and an excellent deal -- didn't suit my mother. So . . . I asked BOOKERC if they took returns; and they were as nice about this as they were everything else.Textbook is really thorough; takes a creative; overlapping approach to U.S. history; seems well-written and researched (sources; suggestions; etc.). I would highly recommend it to anyone looking or needing a smart; up-to-date overview of the period. And I would definitely recommend any purchase from BOOKERC; period!
