Legacy of the Lash is a compelling social and cultural history of the Brazilian navy in the decades preceding and immediately following the 1888 abolition of slavery in Brazil. Focusing on non-elite; mostly black enlisted men and the oppressive labor regimes under which they struggled; the book is an examination of the four-day Revolta da Chibata (Revolt of the Lash) of November 1910; during which nearly half of Rio de Janeiro’s enlisted men rebelled against the use of corporal punishment in the navy. These men seized four new; powerful warships; turned their guns on Rio de Janeiro; Brazil’s capital city; and held its population hostage until the government abolished the use of the lash as a means of military discipline. Although the revolt succeeded; the men involved paid dearly for their actions. This event provides a clear lens through which to examine racial identity; violence; masculinity; citizenship; modernity; and the construction of the Brazilian nation.

Having gone through a female athlete's problems as outlined in this book; I could relate to everything on a personal level. To boot; I taught physical education for 34 years; 31 in a High School and served on the Section I Athletic Council in NY State for 18 years and the women's counterpart to this council for another 10 years prior. The 6 women who served on the Section I Athletic Council (we were nominated by our Athletic Directors to represent girls' sports); which was the governing body of all interscholastic sports in NYS were summarily dismissed in a surprise announcement in the final meeting of that 18th year of service. We were strong and vocal women and we believed they (the men on the Council) had had enough of our questioning and controversial reasoning/input. One of us did have the courage to rebut that announcement and I clearly remember the stunned faces on most of the men in that room. The dismissal decision remained; however. I went through the initiation of Title IX with all its contingent problems and assets. Harrowing times; in addition to "Qualifying Times"!! Even with Title IX; my girls' basketball team; when returning from an away game; had to change in my office because the visiting boys' team had use of our locker room (usually destroying it!) for years. We've come a long way; Baby!! Girls today just have no idea....Years after she graduated; a former student and member of 2 of the teams I coached contacted me and suggested that I write a book about my experiences and the evolution of girls' sports. Now I don't have to. Thank you; Jaime Schultz! Judi Forrest; Tarrytown; NY0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I go back and forth on this book. It's ...By AbbyI go back and forth on this book. It's certainly unique amongst books on women's sports; including chapters on the sports bra; tampons; and more; but in some ways; the topics are almost too specific to give the broader picture. As the title suggests; Schultz's goal is to pick out the vital moments for women's sports; but I question; then; why there wouldn't be a chapter specifically on the passage of Title IX. The book varies between giving a chronological account of women's participation in sports and a thematic one which I wasn't always fond of. All in all; though; I learned a lot from the book and Schultz clearly did her research.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Brookenicole04In great condition.
