Between Race and Ethnicity: Cape Verdean American Immigrants; 1860-1965 (Statue of Liberty Ellis Island)

audiobook Between Race and Ethnicity: Cape Verdean American Immigrants; 1860-1965 (Statue of Liberty Ellis Island) by Marilyn Halter in History

Description

Bigelow shows that Jamaica's troubles were caused not by lazy blacks but by the incompetence of absentee white planters operating within an obsolete colonial system. This book also highlights that although large plantations languished; many former slaves worked tirelessly and became successful small-scale landowners.

My husband; who had a grandparent who was Cape Verdean; had always wondered how he grew an Afro if he was Caucasian. He has been reading it every night; and loves this book. It is definitely a heavier read in parts; but if you have ancestors who were Cape Verdean; I almost guarantee you will keep reading. It answers so many questions.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy coreyAmazing read!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great history from a research perspectiveBy CustomerDr. Halter's book is a great read from a research perspective. She gives the stories extra depth by providing her research into the many areas covered. She also conducts interviews with some immigrants and their children; which definitely give some life to the readings. I read it together with Manuel E. Costa's "The Making of Cape Verdean". Nice complement.
