This is a textbook; and the price is horrendous even for a used copy; which is truly a shame because the price alone makes this wonderful book so very inaccessible to the average reader. Patrick S. Bresnan is a talented writer as he beautifully introduces stories and concepts behind Hinduism and Asian Buddhist traditions. His prose style is interesting and very understandable; with a subtle touch of humor where warranted; and he makes complex ideas very easy to understand and absorb. From start to finish this is a thoughtful; enjoyable and enlightening read. I had intended to sell back this book at the end of the semester; but I love it so much I now plan to keep it for myself. I wish it were more affordable so readers interested in the subject would be more likely to buy it. An earlier edition exists for slightly less money; but I don't know how it might be different from this edition; it has fewer pages.
